This week I learned about the premortal and mortal Christ. Before he came into the world, Jesus was with God. He had the authority of God, and with that authority made the world. Jesus is the light and life of men. He is the light that shines in the darkness.
After Christ was born, he was glorious; full of grace and truth. He was the Only Begotten Son of God. He made this world, and us, but once He was born into the world we did not know Him. Because of His grace, those who believe in Him and come to know Him become His children. Jesus glorified God by finishing the work He was sent to do, which was atoning for our sins. He has power over the flesh, meaning He overcame death and was resurrected. We will be resurrected as well because of His loving sacrifice.
I also learned about the different names that Christ has. I'll say a little bit about five of them; Christ, Messiah, Jehovah, Immanuel, and The Word. All of His titles are an expression of Jesus' divine origin. Many of them were made known before His birth. The first is Christ: Christ is a holy title, and is a Greek variation of the Hebrew "Messiah." Messiah is the Hebrew word signifying the Anointed One. Next is Jehovah, which means "Self-existent One" or "The Eternal." This is also why He is sometimes referred to as the great "I Am." Immanuel is a name-title given as a sign of God's deliverance. It means "God with us." Lastly, "The Word" refers to the fact that the word (or the will and commandment) of God was put into effect through Jesus, thus he is The Word.
I drew these conclusions from my reading in John, primarily John 1:1-14 and John 17:1-5. I also looked some things up in the Bible Dictionary and The New Testament Student Manuel (pages 15 and 17).
