This morning Ryan was practicing dry firing his .45 and our three year old says, “I wanna see! Can I hold it?” So Ryan makes the gun safe for him and makes him sit at the table so he can look at it. When I say he makes the gun “safe,” I mean the magazine is out, there’s no round in the chamber, and the slide is locked back. As you can imagine, I still get pretty nervous when Kender wants to handle the gun, so I have to double check it myself. I could see that the mag was out and the slide was locked back, but to me there was only one way to know for sure that there was no round in the chamber: with my finger off the trigger, I very carefully peaked down the barrel before I allowed Kender to hold it.
Obviously, this made Ryan uneasy, so he showed me
this video and went over the 4 basic rules of firearm safety with me.
Well, I think I’ve learned my lesson! This guy is teaching a class on gun safety and accidentally shoots himself in the leg… and keeps going. At first I didn’t realize that he had shot himself! I thought the gun had just gone off, but then Deputy Dreamy informed me that he had just uttered the phrase, “I am the only person I know professional enough to handle a Glock .40″ and then accidentally shot himself. Holy crap!
So here are those 4 rules:
- Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
- Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire.
Apparently this guy broke all 4 rules, and he’s an instructor. I broke rules 2 and 3, but thankfully nothing happened. So what’s the moral of the story? Never get too comfortable, or too cocky! That’s a lesson I hope we never forget.
