The story behind "April's Happy Place"
Those of you who keep up with my blog (hi mom!) might be wondering why it’s constantly changing. The name, the platform, the content, everything. Inconsistency has been the only constant around here for the past couple of years. Oops!
It’s a long story, but I’ll do my best to summarize it so you’re not struggling to stay awake while reading. We wouldn’t want any drool on that keyboard 😉
I started my first little family blog back in 2010. I used it to keep our loved ones updated on our growing and changing family. I started taking a web business class in college, and as a result, I did a lot of experimenting with blogs. My family blog bounced from Blogger to Weebly to WordPress then back to Blogger, then WordPress again, and now blogger again. I can’t even give you a legitimate reason why… The grass was always greener I guess! Hours of copying & pasting, code cleanup, and replacing images were involved. Many liters of Dr Pepper were also involved.
I changed the name and URL of my blog more times than I remember, just for fun. I made it pretty difficult for my loved ones to follow. I pretty much had to send them a link every time I wrote a new post.
But through that process, I learned a lot and I became very attached to this little family blog.
At some point in the process, I started a self hosted art blog as my “money maker” (because I learned from my web business class that you can actually make money from blogs, and I was fascinated by the idea). But… No one cares about art. Not the way I was writing about it anyway (lengthy and boring written tutorials – bleh). It died before long, as did my attempts at lifestyle and beauty blogs.
My downfall came once I started comparing myself to all the well established bloggers who make thousands of dollars a month. I felt like I was failing at blogging because I wasn’t getting tons of page views. It didn’t matter that those pro bloggers had been working consistently for years and I was just starting out, and we had different goals on top of that.
|This is the logo and tagline I used for my attempt at an art blog. I actually put a lot of effort into designing it, and I like it a lot 🙂|
I took a break for a few months and then decided to just go back to my good ole’ family blog… The one that makes me happy.
That’s how this version of April’s Happy Place came to be. It’s a compilation of my favorite posts from all the blogs I’ve experimented with (mostly family and lifestyle). It’s where I collect and share all the things that make me happy.

Writing about my family and my thoughts and faith – that’s what I’m passionate about. Not page views and money. My focus is documenting life, one moment at a time. For myself and my family.
So that’s the story behind this blog! Thank you to anyone who reads it. It’s rewarding to spill my thoughts here and feel heard ♥
Has anyone else experienced some kind of blogging obsession? I’d love to hear any stories or tips you may have for keeping things balanced!
