The first step in building our homestead was getting some land and putting a house on it. We had been living in Ryan's parent's basement apartment for a few years and were eager for a place of our own. Ryan's dad helped us find a five acre property and build our house. It took about a year and a half from the time we started clearing the land until we were able to move in. Ryan and Paul (Ryan's dad) spent all of their free time working on our future home.
