On Monday Ryan’s mom watched the boys for us so Ryan could take his dad and I to run some shooting drills. He gets to practice his shooting all the time now that he’s a deputy, but I haven’t been since… I can’t even remember. It’s been a LONG time. I needed some practice!
There’s a nice big gravel pit near our house, and it’s the perfect place to set up for target shooting. I hate going to gun ranges because it’s such close quarters. I feel much more comfortable shooting outside.
Setting up our targets
Loading up the mags
I knew I’d be rusty, and that was pretty evident after our first drill. Ryan had us load up two mags with rubber bullets just to get comfortable holding our pistols. Next he had us load up 3 duds with 2 actual bullets. Then 4 bullets and one dud, then 9 bullets and one dud. The purpose of the dud was to get us comfortable with what to do if the gun malfunctions (it’s called the “tap & rack”). It was really fun to practice with Ryan and his dad, and especially cool that we get free training from a pro. I miss shooting!
I’m glad Mason is getting older and we have the perfect location near our house so we can go practice often. I always walk away feeling pretty good about myself. I’m actually a pretty good shot! I doubt I’d get such tight groupings if I ever had to actually defend myself, but it’s comforting to know I can at least hit a target 😁
The lower shots are when we first started, and the bulleyes are when I felt more comfortable during round 2.
Plant Nerd Update
Look what I found at the gravel pit when we were shooting! St. John’s Wort! I collected it in my water bottle to bring home to our little survival garden, which currently consists of chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, rosemary, mint, thyme, basil, sage, oregano, dill, parsley, and now St. John’s Wort! It was a pretty exciting find for a novice herbalist such as myself 😄
