What We’ve Been Up To Lately

It’s now the end of November and I’ve decided it’s probably time for another update…

Well, the ROTC thing didn’t quite go as planned. Ryan applied to the University of Washington and did everything he needed to before the deadline, but his transcripts somehow got lost on their end so he missed the deadline anyway. We’ve decided that we will stay here for now, since Ryan has a good job and we have a baby on the way. There’s a chance we will end up back in Rexburg after the baby is born, but who knows. Those will be unpredictable times!

As for myself, I’ve been getting kind of bored lately while Ryan is at work. I don’t have to sleep as much anymore, so I’ve had a lot more time on my hands. I’m liking the transition into the second trimester so far! Anyway, I started reading the Harry Potter series and I’m currently on book 4, but reading all day loses its fun after a while. One day I got a strange urge to start drawing again, so I got out my old fashioned sketch book and charcoal pencils from school. I got tired of that in about 10 minutes after my hands became black from all the dust, but then I remembered that I have a tablet for my PC that is far less messy! So I hopped on my computer and started painting using Photoshop, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since!

Here is my tablet, in case you’re not sure what I’m talking about:

I thought it might be fun to show part of my painting process on here, since sometimes I feel like the concept of “digital painting” can be hard for people to understand.

First, I use this handy little grid system to draw a sketch of my reference photo. A lot of people frown upon the grid system for some reason, but I feel like it’s basically the same thing as using plumb lines so I do it anyway.

Here is an example of the grid:

Once I have this completed sketch:

I start adding in the colors and details. This process is also known as “rendering”:

Then a few hours later after adding some more details and finishing touches… Tada! The finished product.

Ain’t she cute??? I call this one “Cuddly Calico.” 🙂
